Meaningful Object Essay | Talia Rosen

A silver chain and two shiny, white pearls make up the object that I hold dear in my heart. This necklace came from a very important figure in my life, my grandma Benedict. Before my grandmother passed away she decided that all of the women in the family deserved a little piece of her, so we all received one as a gift from her at one Christmas. My grandmother had a real pearl necklace that was worth a lot and one day it broke. So she decided, instead of throwing it away that she wanted to have a group of necklaces made that had two pearls.

On the necklace the two pearls are connected by a string and then the silver chain makes up the rest of the necklace. What I always took the meaning of the two pearls as was that one was a representation of her and the other one of whomever had received the necklace. So she was always close, object essay. There are a multitude of reasons why I find this object so important in my life, object essay. One of which is because my grandmother passed away my freshman year of high school. She was one of the most influential people in my life. She was an inspiration to not only me but to anyone she met, and with this necklace I can still feel her presence today. My grandmother was not only an inspiration because of how kind, gentle and faithful she was, but we also shared many key interests in our lives object essay made losing her just that much more difficult.

She is actually the person who inspired me to follow my dreams object essay pursue a career that I loved. Whenever I wear my necklace I feel as if she is right there next to me, always looking out for me. The weight of the necklace is like the weight I carry in my heart, knowing that she is gone but that she will always be here for me when Object essay need her. Her spirit will forever live on in the lives of the people that she touched, and the necklace is just a physical representation of that love. However my sister, Krystal, borrowed it to wear at her wedding on September 14th and I was happy that I had it for her.

Society today would see the importance in the object because it is a pearl necklace and it is valuable, but they would not see the meaning and the love behind it that I personally feel. I feel as if my necklace is a representation of my grandmother and that it is a memory of her. Every time I see it I am reminded of her and filled with love and happiness. I love my necklace. It is a reminder that I always have an angel looking out for me, and I find myself thinking of my grandmother and the happy memories when I have my object essay on and so I believe that what Turkle says is correct. Normally a pearl necklace would be thought of as a cold object, or an object that represents money and wealth, but I only see warmth and love behind it because for me it represents my family, object essay.

It is important that objects make us feel this way, that we hold them dear to us. Because we are put different memories into different objects. For me, the necklace is my grandmother. Her memory was put into the necklace so I would never forget her or the love we had for each other. The thing that I find the most interesting family heirlooms or just objects passed down to children is that to each person an object takes on a new meaning. Object essay may not understand everything that an object meant to the person who held it before them, and may never, but to them it would take on a new meaning.

It would be the necklace that their mother, or their aunt, or even THEIR grandmother gave to them out of love and they would remember them because of it. So, objects can take on new meanings. For example, my necklace started out as a gift from my grandmother and has changed into something that completely represents her, object essay. Later even it may take on a new meaning entirely. Object essay way life changes things and how different people view different things is incredible. How one thing to one person can be completely different to the next, or how objects can transform from an inanimate, object essay insignificant object to one that means the world to someone.

The fact that a necklace could mean so much and have so many memories behind it for me, but when you give it so someone else all they see is a pretty necklace with some pearls on it is crazy. So always treasure the things that are important in your life and realize that you may be the only one object essay thinks of them in a specific way and that in and of itself is special, object essay.
