It is language. Where did it come from? How is it linked with writing? In the next essay I will attempt to answer this questions as well others that may arise. Language is the institute whereby humans communicate and interact with each other by the means of habitually-used oral auditory arbitrary signs and symbols. Language surrounds us in our everyday life even before we are born we can hear sounds and intonation of our mother tongue. Believe it or not but humans from all works of life use language when we sleep, we dream in language, even when we think our thoughts are made up of language.
Language sets us apart from any other living organisms because spoken language is only confined and restricted to humans and is also distinct from any other system of communication. So where does language come from? In the bible there are two accounts that give an answer to the enigma of the origin of language. First there is no evidence or proof to suggest that the Tower of Babel was ever build so we cannot verify whether the tower was build or rather somebody made up the story or not, so people who are not religious believe it was all a myth and hoax. Apart from the biblical account of the origin of language there are also theories which try to explain how language was developed and where originated from, essay on the origin of languages.
homo sapiens imitated sounds from the surroundings and then either identified an animal or object by the sound it made e. when a lion roared prehistoric humans could repeat the sound to one another and automatically they could tell it was a lion. sounds we made when we were happy, essay on the origin of languages, scared, exhausted, or hurt. The problem with this theory is that it suggest we all make the same sounds to express our feelings e. if somebody stepped on a thorn and screamed ouch! The theory fails to explain how words related with physical exclamations build up to the large vocabulary we use today.
The last item I am going to discuss concerning the development of language is a scientific one. The gene was discovered in Britain in the late twentieth century. Humans use sounds waves and vibrations in our voice manipulated by our voice box larynx to communicate with one another. But one may also argue that statement and ask how do individuals who cannot speak communicate? The desire for humans to communicate and get in touch with one another led to the greatest invention of mankind to date and that was writing. Even though the medium of language is speech, the hearing impaired use signs to communicate with each other. This means that language can be expressed through signs as well.
Writing in Namibia can be traced back to the San Bushmen who painted and engraved images of animals and humans on caves, rocks and mountains. Another interesting piece of rock art painting in Namibia is the White lady painting discovered in at the Brandberg Mountain. The paintings are believed to have been painted around and years ago while others are dated back to 25 years. Fast- forward the history of the invention of writing to today and you might actually realise that it enabled humans to communicate with each other through Newspapers, books, magazines and Journalists. The Bantu people make up the major population of all African people.
This people are made up of more than groups all over Africa and they consider themselves to be a separate cultural and political unit essay on the origin of languages their own history and language dialect. The first Bantu people are believed to have settled in Cameroon and Ivory Coast. The influx of Bantu people in western Africa caused their population to rise. They broke up into smaller clans and factions whom started to break away from the main Bantu who came to Africa this resulted in new languages and nations to form in Africa. The Bantu were great farmers; they had large heads of cattle and goats. They could make weapons and objects from iron because they brought knowledge essay on the origin of languages iron making to Africa.
Essay on the origin of languages few real life examples of groups that migrated from west Africa into southern Africa in Namibia are the OvahereroOvazemba,Ovahimba and Ovambo this groups are considered to have come from the same groups of Bantu but then separated when they settled in Namibia. They are considered to be related because of the cultural practices and also because of some of the similar pronunciation of words in their languages. Other groups in Africa which were once one group but defected from each other are the Zulu in South Africa and Setswana in Botswana, the Nama and Damara cultural groups in Namibia as well. I also want to point out that although language is only confined to Humans, animals can still communicate and interact with one another.
Communication in Humans is far more complex and complicated than in animals. Finally the difference between spoken and written language has transformed what we know about language.
